The Present helps build the future!!!

On Feb 28 and March 1, the Toga Varsity Baseball team welcomed 4th to 8th graders to the 2nd annual Blue Streak Baseball clinic.  Under the tutelage of 2nd year Head Coach Andy Cuthbertson and his staff, the youth of Saratoga Baseball would get their chance to learn and begin their potential journey towards becoming a Varsity team member.  Following a quick pep talk by Coach and senior CF Jake Fauler, the instructors and youngsters got to work.  They started things off with the most important part of any workout and that is stretching and preparing the body for work.

Using the white and Aux Gyms at SSHS, they were divided up into stations to help teach bunting, pitching and hitting techniques.  One of the best stations was the Swing Analyzer.  This station used cameras and computers to gauge the players swing and offer them ways to improve it.  After the player completes their time, the computer will give the a complete work up of their swing(via email) and include videos and notes on how to make it better.

The stations and devices used are terrific but having talked with some of the young men, the one thing that is most evident is that they are excited to be working with the Varsity team members the most.  They look up to them like the cool big brother.

Something important this reporter took away from this is that in only his 2nd year at the helm, Coach C is developing a real program from top to bottom.  He is fostering a bond of brotherhood from the Varsity players right down to the young elementary school age kid picking up a mitt for the first time.

We see great things for the future and the present of Toga Baseball!!!

Toga Vs Albany

Coach Cuthbertson saw a chance to get his younger players an opportunity to start and he took it.  With only regular starter Brian Hart in the line up the team took the field.  Vavasour pitched three solid innings but Albany took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the 7th.  The Coach C sent in the heavy hitters Fauler slapped a bunt and out ran the throw to first, stole second and scored on McArthurs single to tie the game.  Leffler hit a sac bunt that moved McArthur to second.  McArthur moved to third on a passed ball and they intentionally walked Hart.  Powell reached first to load the bases for Alex Henderson and he delivered with a walk off hit to center!!! Toga wins 6-5.  They travel to face BH/BL Friday at noon(weather permitting) If game is called due to rain it will be played Saturday at 11 am

Talking with former Toga Ace Danny Hobbs

We took to twitter and talked with former Toga Ace and current Siena Saints Pitcher Danny Hobbs.  Hobbs was just a day removed from pitching in his first college baseball game, a 1 inning shut out job.  Siena opened its season against a very strong Central Florida team.

This is what Danny had to say about pitching in his first game:

"It was really crazy, the crowd was huge and against such a good team it was an incredible baseball experience. "

What differences are there from HS to College?

"There are huge differences between high school and college baseball. In high school baseball you can kind of get away with a lot of your mistakes with velocity but in college that's not the case, everyone has velocity and if you miss a spot chances are the hitter is going to crush it. "

We asked Danny if there was one former Toga team mate he missed the most?

"I miss all my high school teammates so much but in terms of baseball it would have to be my catcher Coffey, he always knew exactly what to say to me and I credit him a lot with the baseball player that I have become today. "

Danny what advice do you have for this years Toga Squad?

"Advice for this years Toga team would be stay focused and work as hard as you can because you only play high school baseball once. "

As many Toga Sports may know, Danny was also a standout goalie for the Hockey team.  We asked him if he missed being able to skate in between the pipes and stare down the oncoming puck?

"I miss hockey a ton, especially the coaches and friends that I had on the team. Playing at weibel with a huge crowd against a rival is something very special and something that I really miss."

Toga suffers its first loss of the season 7-5 to Ballston Spa.

The team battled back from an early 4-0 hole to tie it at 4 in the 3rd.  In the fifth inning Ballston Spa went 6-4 when Keegan Leffler made a beautiful diving catch that should have ended the inning but the umpires made a bad call and said it hit the ground first.  Toga would make it a game right to the end.

The Battle of I-87 Champions

2017

2016 Senior Night

and

There's No Place Like Home Game

This game had special meaning for us here at the THS.  The team asked us if they could do something to help us because of our disabilities.  Toga Baseball hosted a fundraiser for us so we make our home fully wheel chair accessible and with the proceeds from this game and two other events we hope to have it all completed by the end of the summer.

Now on to the game and the festivities.

After a little rain the seniors were introduced and honored along with their families.  This year Toga had 8 seniors.

Danny Hobbs, Danny Coleman, Nick Kondo, Jake Kerr, Brendon Frank,   Brendan "Hey we want some" Coffey, Cory McArthur and Shane Barringer.

These 8 young men are assets to our community and we wish them all the best as they move on to the next phase of their travel next year.

I might be a little biased on this next part but it was the coolest part of the night.  I was honored to be able to "throw" out the first pitch.   Since I lost the ability to actually throw because of my Muscular Dystrophy, my dad and I built a catapult for me to use.  I even towed it out behind my wheelchair and then fired a pitch into home plate from the mound.  Even cooler was that the one guy I on the team that is more of a brother to me then a friend, Cory McArthur, caught my pitch!!!

The feeling of getting to be like him and doing that in front of such a large and cheering crowd will be one of my most cherished memories.

So how did the game turn out?  Well Toga would have a win 22-2 of the Black Horses of Schuylerville but in all honesty every player on that field last night was a winner.  Both sides had fun and helped us towards our dream and we cannot thank them all enough!!!!  So to both teams we say Thank you and Good Luck to the seniors on both teams.  We want to thank all of the fans and the Toga Community for helping Phillip and I and now we want for Monday Morning when we find out where and who Toga will play in the first round of Sectionals!!!!!
